  1. Love, love, love peonies, but they do not grow in San Francisco. I bought some fake ones and I keep them where they don’t look quite so fake (up on shelf). Of course, not as good as the real ones. Cannot even find them in flower marts here.

    • That’s only because it’s been rainy. We don’t get the bugs on them though. At least not so far. They get too heavy and fall to the ground though.

      • Do you know this poem from Mary Oliver? (is it okay to print it here?)

This morning the green fists of the peonies are getting ready
        to break my heart
        as the sun rises,
as the sun strokes them with his old, buttery fingers

        and they open —
        pools of lace,
        white and pink —
and all day the black ants climb over them,

boring their deep and mysterious holes
        into the curls,
        craving the sweet sap,
        taking it away

to their dark, underground cities —
        and all day
        under the shifty wind,
as in a dance to the great wedding,

the flowers bend their bright bodies,
and tip their fragrance to the air,
        and rise,
        their red stems holding

        all that dampness and recklessness
        gladly and lightly,
and there it is again —
        beauty the brave, the exemplary,

        blazing open.
        Do you love this world?
Do you cherish your humble and silky life?
Do you adore the green grass, with its terror beneath?

Do you also hurry, half-dressed and barefoot, into the garden,
        and softly,
        and exclaiming of their dearness,
fill your arms with the white and pink flowers,

with their honeyed heaviness, their lush trembling,
        their eagerness
to be wild and perfect for a moment, before they are
        nothing, forever?

from New And Selected Poems by Mary Oliver

  2. I have had the worst luck trying to grow these, but yours are gorgeous!

  3. Peonies are my favorite home garden flower! I just wish there was a way to bring them inside without so many ants! Don’t live in a home anymore, so thanks for the pic!

  4. Now I know why I read the things said about peonies ! – they’re almost vulgar in their lush beauty !

  5. Absolutely stunning images —- certainly fascinating and delightful. You have made my morning as I’m still waiting for ours to begin to grow – living where we do, everything takes its sweet time and it’ll be June before we have buds and flowers. So thank you 🙂
