To Be Warm, Build a Fire

040715heater_3Sunday morning our heat pump which is our heater and air conditioning unit started to make a horrible whine and had a clinking sound.  I’m sure it woke the entire neighborhood.  So Monday morning, we had the repair man come and visit.  We were told that the motor of the unit broke.  We could get that replaced, but no guarantee the rest of the 23 year old unit would last long.  We were told that heat pumps usually last 15 years.  So we decided to get a new heater and heat pump.  And that won’t be installed until next Wednesday or Thursday.

I know all you people in the northern part of the hemisphere that have snow in your yard will laugh at me for saying I want my heater back.  We are still getting down as low as 35 degrees on some nights.  In a couple of days our lows should at least get back up into the 40+ degree levels.  So for now we are using our wood stove to heat us.

My computer, phone and camera lens on the table we set up in our living room. Chris now has her computer on the far side.

Chris and I moved our computers out to the living room by the stove so we can work and play. For our smaller rooms we have little floor heaters that work just wonderful.

So yesterday we had repair people and salesman in and out of our house all day long.  We seemed to take it all in stride.  We arranged for 5% financing.  All the plans are running smoothy for us.

Although this morning I woke up feeling angry and very disconnected.  So Chris went out and bought me a latte and breakfast.  Isn’t she just so sweet.  That definitely cheered me up some.

Anyhow, here are a few photos from earlier today.  ENJOY!

  1. There is just something about wood burning stoves/fireplaces that I simply adore. It looks so inviting to pull up a chair by. I do not think I would get any work done.

  2. I’m glad you had Chris there to buy you latte and a breakfast to get you through your angry, disconnected feeling this morning. Those unexpected big expenses can sure sting for awhile. Your arrangement of the two of you in front of the fire with your computers looks very cozy. Hopefully, the negative emotions can drift away and you can enjoy a week of sitting in front of the fire together.

  3. The good news is you can have a wood fire. I find watching a fire in the fireplace/stove hypnotic and often wish I had one.

  4. That sucks that you have to replace the heat pump. We replaced ours two years ago because it couldn’t keep us warm enough in the winter or cool enough in the summer. Thankfully we didn’t have an emergency before we did it (it was about 17 years old at the time).

And yes, kudos to Chris for taking care of your bad mood. That’s what partners are for.

  5. You have my sympathy! I went through 3 days without heat 2 winters ago when our furnace died for good. It’s not fun. Sending you warm thoughts!

  6. I know it’s a hassle, but aren’t woodstoves great? I love the smell of wood burning and it’s such a cozy kind of heat. That IS quite cold, no matter what climate you live in, certainly cold enough to need heating. At least you have electricity!

    • Well we bought this stove last year just for heating the house when it got real cold. It never got that cold this winter, so we are using it now. 🙂

  7. Man, I hate it when I wake up crabby. I’m glad Chris was empathetic and rescued you with a latte!

I must say, your fire looks very cozy. I’m getting sleepy just looking at the photo. 🙂

  8. I miss my fireplace from years ago. It had an electric blower fan that distributed the heat throughout our house. I’d lay on the carpeted floor in front of that freestanding wood fireplace and roll occasionally like a rotisserie hotdog. 🙂
