This is a story I wrote when I was 6 years old, about the loss of my pet dog.

Here is my first story I ever wrote about grief.  I was six years old and in the first grade at the time.

Here is the translation for those of your who need it.  I was known as Patti at that age.  My father was a forest ranger and we lived in the woods.

The Dog

Lady was a little dog.  Lady only a year old.  She got lost in the woods and got a bullet.  She had to go to the veterinarian. She had to die.

I remember getting Lady as a young puppy.   Someone we knew had a littler of puppies and my sister and I got to pick her out.  One day in the fall she just never came home.  About a week later there was this faint sound at the door and it was Lady who had been shot by a hunter.

  1. Life is tough, but good you could write about it. I don’t believe in hiding everything from children – it will be easier for them to handle if they learn from the start. With support and help from parents.

  2. It’s so sad for a six-year-old. It was good that you wrote about it. My daughter’s poodle was bitten in the neck by a coyote in our backyard. We saw it from upstairs and had to tell her and let her see it before she went to school. She was in 4th grade, but it was still hard.

  3. Such a sad thing for a six-year-old to go through. Our little dachshund passed away last week, and it was hard to experience as a grown-up.

    • I’m so sorry for you. You much miss your little dachshund very much. Loss of a pet is a huge loss, so often they become just like any other family member. Thanks for sharing your loss.
