Lens-Artists Challenge #140: A Change of Scenery

Here is my entry for Guest Host, Wandering Dawgs, of Lens-Artists Photo A Week Challenge with the topic of A Change In Scenery.

Chris and I went to the Tulip Field yesterday (Sunday). It was our 4th Sunday we have driven down there. The Tulip Festival officially opened on Friday, so there were a few people walking the few rows of color that was in the field. I took a few photos, but the fields weren’t in bloom enough for me to get out and walk around since I’m still struggling with long haul Covid. My breathing and walking around is still a thing in the past.

Anyhow, as we were leaving we saw these people in an unused field and it looked like they were setting up a balloon, so we decided to watch. It wasn’t a balloon, but a huge 100 foot kite. They ended up putting a lot of kites up. Here is a series of photos that I took. We must have sat in the car with my camera hanging out of the window for two hours.

The first picture gives you some perspective on size of these kites. The tail was at least 100′ long. They had to open the mouth so the kite could fill with air before it took flight.
This photo show the kite flying in the air. That is a real airplane flying fairly close to the kit.
One of the last kites we saw them fly, was this cute blue penguin. I ended up taking 300 photos while watching the kites take off and fly.
There ended up being two of the 100′ kits and a fish to entertain them. Look at all the string these kites have.
This dragon and flying pig were tethered together.
The one big kit (farthest left) was fling on its own, the other four where tethered together.

These kites run from $150 to $300+ for just the kites.  You need 500# test line and accessories as well.  Not for the amateur.

We felt so fortunate to see all these kites flying at once. I felt lucky I could keep them in the frame.

I’ve put together a list of challenges and their hosts.  So if you know a challenge host, please direct them to my blog.  Feel free to contact me anytime.  I hope everyone will be able to use my lists.

  1. That is unbelievable, Cee. I’ve never seen anything like it, and imagine you just happened to be there. What a great way to spend 2 hours. Patience pays off. 🙂

  2. What cool kites! So many amazing shapes, colors and sizes! Today would have been a great day here to fly a kite, with wind gusts up to 40 mph!

  3. Wow Cee, what a fantastic find! How glad you must have been to have happened upon it and to have stopped! I loved these, have never heard of such a thing! I’d not read before that you are a long-hauler – I’m so sorry to hear that. Hope you’re feeling better soon. I read that many long-haulers are getting relief from their symptoms when the get vaccinated. Hoping that happens for you.

    • Chris go her shot nearly two weeks ago now. She was really sick for about 5 days, but then the shift happened. She has so vastly improved. She can actually walk, talk and breath all at the same time. Now after 6 months of Covid and long haul, she has to regain her strength. I’m not eligible for my shot until next week. Thanks Tina.

    • Chris got her covid shot a couple weeks ago. She got real sick for about 5 or 6 days, then it totally reversed. She can breathe, walk and talk all at the same time. The little research there is about long haulers who get their shot looks promising for us long haulers. I’m not eligible until the 1st of April, but I’m looking forward to getting it. 😀
