Bloganuary: What was your favorite toy as a child?

The ages I think about is 5 to 9 when asked a question like this. My favorite toy was the wood in which I lived. I lived in a classic old fashioned log house, maybe that’s why I have always liked Lincoln Logs.

This is the house I lived in when I was a child living in Tofte, Minnesota. (photo from the web)

What I remember most was playing in the woods. The house I lived in was part of a Ranger Station where my dad worked as a forest ranger. So I was familiar with the woods and how to navigate them. At least that’s what I thought. My sister and I would follow deer trails and collect wild flowers and overall just have fun.

So I thought I would show a couple of photos of woods. The photos shown here are in Oregon where I currently live.

I’ve gathered a list of challenges and their hosts.  So if you know a challenge host, please direct them to my blog.  Feel free to contact me anytime.  I hope everyone will be able to use my lists.

  1. I love that the forest is your favorite toy! I was drawn to mud at that age. My neighbor and I built worm cities for the worms in the big ditches that everyone had running along the street instead of sidewalks!

  3. I played outdoors a lot growing up. Don’t really recall any toys. Loved running, jumping, climbing – things like that 😂😂

  4. Love the cabin and what a fun childhood Cee. I live in a forest now but was a city boy. I should have written that when I was a child some of my favourite toys would have been sticks 🙂

  5. Lovely post! I spent every possible moment in the woods when I was a kid. I loved the outdoors in general, and practically lived in a tree! 🙂 There were two sets of woods across the road from our house, and beautiful meadows in between. I’d look for vine swings to swing across little creeks, and climb ravines and pretend to be a woodsperson. To this day I adore wooded areas…our property here in Ohio borders the highway, but it has become overgrown to the extent that it is a sanctuary for all sorts of animals.:-)

      • My time spent playing in the woods was happy time for me, amid a very trying childhood in general. A wooded scene is still my go-to place. Now as a grown-up 😉 i still treasure my tree garden, which I post about sometimes. Hope 2022 is happy so far. 🙂

        • 2022 has been good so far. Way too much rain and dark gray skies, but that easy stuff to manage.
I hear you about the woods being a sanctuary from a bad childhood or parents. I think that’s why I loved living there so much.

          • it was always possible to daydream about the woodsy environment. I was almost always alone in my wooded adventures, which was ok with me. To this day I prefer to travel alone, even on guided tours I like to avoid instant “befriending,” many people have disliked my “picture-taking” which is often the main thing I want to do.

  6. Gosh, that sounds like a fantastic place to grow up! I always wanted tot live in a log cabin, but that’s probably not going to happen.

  7. Cee, that sounds like an absolute dream. And the house looks so Little House on the Prairie! You’ll have to tell us more – you must have great stories!
