July 8 – TreeSquare – Monkey Puzzle Tree

This is my entry for Becky’s for July #TreeSquare challenge.

This is the Monkey Puzzle Tree. or Araucaria araucana to be more precise. Click here if you want to read more about it.

We have a couple of them in town. The tree I have photos of is just down the block from me.

This is the top 20 feet or so. This is all above the single story house.
This photo is of the bottom half of the tree.
On the female trees, they get these big seed pods.
The is a close up of a seed pod and an empty seed pod.

I’ve put together a list of challenges and their hosts.  So if you know a challenge host, please direct them to my blog.  Feel free to contact me anytime.  I hope everyone will be able to use my lists.

  1. That’s an impressive, healthy specimen! I wanted to post a monkey puzzle photo for Becky’s challenge, and I was sure I had a couple of shot, but they are lost somewhere. So I’ll settle for admiring yours. 🙂

  2. I grew up on the west coast and I remember them there. I asked my Dad why they were called Monkey Puzzle trees. He said it was because the branches were too confusing for the monkeys to climb.

  3. Very interesting tree. I have heard of them, but I don’t know that I’ve ever seen one. Great photos, Cee.

  4. I have only seen ONE tree of this type and that was more than 30 years ago in New York — which is a bit warmer than Massachusetts. I don’t think they typically grow in this climate. This one was big and it was right next to a Japanese restaurant, so maybe they protected it in the winter. It’s good to see another one!
