Pix to Word Challenge #147 – Organic

Here is my entry for Pix to Word’s, Challenge #147 – Organic.

One thing living in a rainforest creates is lots of moss on everything.  I love it in the winter the green can get quite iridescent at times.

Mushrooms and lichen on a tree stump in the woods.

Spanish moss.

Moss on trees and rocks at Multnomah Falls.

Moss growing a a wood post in a local park.Qi (energy) hugs

    • I know it’s all about the lighting, but I have no idea how to capture it either. The only time I capture it well is from a distance (versus rather close to it) and I think it carries the overall light better, but that is only a guess.

      • Is iridescence due to light movement or air movement? Because if it is, then I guess it’s technically impossible to capture on a camera because it is a totally still image.

        • Iridescence : noun

a lustrous rainbowlike play of color caused by differential refraction of light waves (as from an oil slick, soap bubble, or fish scales) that tends to change as the angle of view changes.

Had to look it up to be sure, but iridescence is basically a rainbow refracted on the surface of an object. Seeing one is dependent on the relative angles of the light source and the observer so that the angle of refraction is just right. And if your eye can see it, so can your camera sensor. =)

    • That said, filters on your lens — or your lens itself — could alter the quality of the light before it reaches your sensor. Indeed, a polarizing filter would do just that. If you use a flash, you could be adding a key light which does not have the right angle of incidence to the subject and the flash may overwhelm the iridescence generated by weaker light sources. Finally, it’s possible (but unlikely) your camera settings could be filtering out the iridescence.
