Too Hot and Too Dry for Dahlias

Dahlias are looking so sad this year after all the crazy weather we’ve had this year. Starting out with the extreme heat wave late spring that was 50-60F (10.5-15.5 C) warmer than normal followed by a summer with unusually hot temperatures. On top of that we’ve not had measurable rain since February and are in a drought. So I’m going to do some field comparisons from previous years to this year. Global Warming….definitely.

Here is a dahlia worker in the fields. Left is 2021 and right was 2011.

People the fields. left image 2021 right image 2020 early in the season.

I will have to wait until next year to go back to the fields. I didn’t see one single photographer. A few people had phones with them. So I did manage to get a couple of dahlia photos a couple of which you can see here. Good thing I have thousands of dahlias from the past decade, so I can post dahlias that you’ve not seen yet.

Here are some photos from 2018 of the fields for you to enjoy.

I do want to add, that Swan Island takes marvel care of their fields. Even with them trying to keep these dahlias going, they are losing the battle this year.

I’ve gathered a list of challenges and their hosts.  So if you know a challenge host, please direct them to my blog.  Feel free to contact me anytime.  I hope everyone will be able to use my lists.

  1. Climate change is real. The weather is getting more extreme each year. Just yesterday we had tornados tear through Annapolis, destroying houses and business. And when I say destroy, I mean it. I inadvertently drove by some houses that were devastated: torn off roofs, uprooted trees thrown wily nilly. It was a sobering sight. We never used to see tornados in Maryland. Now they are becoming an annual event. I really worry about the future- not the distant future. I worry what the next day will bring.

  2. It’s sad. We’ve had either broiling hot weather, teeming rain, or both, setting rain records AND high temperature records. I know we needed the rain. No one is arguing that, though it might have been nice had it not all come down in two months. Our garden is essentially kaput. It’s such a mess, I can’t even figure out where to start fixing it. IF it is fixable!

We haven’t gotten out much either. It’s either so hot and humid I can’t breathe or it’s pouring rain. Neither makes from splendid photos. Good thing I have the birds and squirrels!
